Preserving, Protecting and Promoting the Traditional Gypsy Cob and Drum Horse

Historical Event:  On March 20, 2008, representatives from the Gypsy Cob and Drum Horse Association and the Gypsy Cob Society of America, held a meeting to discuss the responsibility of providing much needed unity within the breed sector.

As registries, it is our honor and obligation to safeguard the integrity and reputation of the breed, both now and for generations to come, while still meeting the immediate needs of the membership and planning for future needs.  With this in mind, the GCSA and the GCDHA representatives were able to reach an accord that would allow us to celebrate our similarities, ideals and strengths while working beyond minor differences to unite our two registries.

Many enthusiasts have expressed hope for a merge and it will now be placed in the hands of each registry’s membership.  We hope members will agree and will vote for unity!

GGIFT - Gifted Geldings Incentive Fund & Trust: The new Gifted Geldings incentive program is now under way.  We have received extremely positive feedback on the new Gifted Geldings program, which is designed to recognize, promote and reward Gypsy Cob and Drum Horse geldings who are being used for show, work, exhibition or family fun.

Being the backbone of any breed, geldings hold a special place of recognition and honor, within the Gypsy Cob and Drum Horse Association.  The “Gifted Geldings” program offers the perfect environment to promote, recognize and honor outstanding geldings.  While the incentive to geld should always be the ideal that leads to the betterment of the breed, as well as, the safety and enjoyment of its enthusiasts, many rare breeds, or those breeds enjoying a huge popularity and upswing in numbers, often see the need for an additional incentive. By creating the Gifted Geldings Incentive Foundation & Trust, the Gypsy Cob and Drum Horse Association would like to also recognize and reward those owners/breeders who make the, sometimes difficult, decision to geld.

  • Gifted Geldings will be recognized through inspections, shows and futurities.

  • Gifted Geldings will be honored through designated awards

  • Gifted Geldings will be rewarded through specially allocated funds providing show and inspection paybacks

  • Gifted Geldings who do not show, are eligible for a special award dedicated to the non-show Gifted Gelding who best represents the family and/or service horse.  This award will be based on a written essay to be submitted with photos depicting the Gifted Gelding’s role as the perfect family or service horse.

Oct., 2006 - Union Grove, WI Inspection: Our second inspection was held at a lovely facility in WI. Both stallions and mares were inspected and our judge was the very well known British judge and trainer, Mr. Christopher Willett. High scoring horse of the day was Clononeen Playboy.

At left: Clononeen Playboy - High scoring horse at the Wisconsin inspection.

Oct., 2006 - Spokane, WA Inspection: North America's very first inspection took place under a brilliant blue sky. The judge was none other than renowned artist James Taylor of England. James was as thorough in his inspection of each horse as he is in his artwork and wagon building, running his hands down the legs and picking up the feet of every participant. He was thoughtful and articulate about each score and then, after the inspection, was gracious enough to spend time with each participant going over the fine points of the breed and answering questions about conformation, type and bloodlines. Just as commendable are our participants. With inspections being new to this breed, many people were quite nervous about bringing their horses out and presenting them. Kudos to those brave souls that made this first inspection a success! Thank you to Sharon Teague of Big Sky Gypsy And Drum Horses, Dan & Cyndi Holcomb of White Stone Ranch, Greg and Maureen Griffin of CastleKnoll Gypsy Cobs and Michele Bournonville of Midnight Sun Ranch for being so supportive. And thank you to Shannon Johnson for finding the Spokane Sporthorse Farm, the people at this facility were so nice to work with, we really enjoyed being there.

August, 2006 - Inspection News:  The first inspection will be held in Spokane, WA on Sat., Oct. 7 and the second inspection site is in WI on Sunday, Oct. 15.  More dates will be added throughout the country starting in Feb.

July, 2006 -  YOUTH NEWS: Giving the GCDHA's new youth program a big boost is Lise McNamara of Blarney Stone Acres. Beginning in 2007, Lise and husband Steven have volunteered to sponsor up to 2 youths, annually, on a trip abroad.  As part of a trial run for a possible Pony Club exchange program, Lise's daughter, Kelsey, just spent a week riding with Pony Club in Ireland. Her host was Deirdre Cash, who is herself a graduate and huge fan of Ireland's Pony Club.

Even though Kelsey's "borrowed" horse was not a Gypsy Cob, she was still able to spend a wonderful week in Ireland doing what she really loves...jumping!

We hope these sponsored trips abroad will not only encourage and improve our children's equestrian abilities but will also give them a first hand opportunity to experience the rich culture and diversity of other countries and lead them to making life long friends from around the world.

April, 2006 - GCDHA Members overwhelmingly voted to institute a new Embryo Transfer program requiring mare owners to nominate donor mares, provide a veterinarian certificate ruling out any reproductive abnormalities and it also includes a fee schedule based on a sliding scale depending on the number of embryos the donor mare contributes. For more information contact the GCDHA office at GCDHA@aol.com

April 6 - 9, 2006 - The Equine Affaire in Columbus, OH was another smashing success. With a booth and exhibit stall located in the Breed Pavilion and a display in the Horse & Farm Exhibits area, we had a huge amount of exposure. The Gypsy Cobs and Drum Horses were also involved in a total of 5 demonstrations and included horses in-hand, side saddle, hunt seat, saddle seat, driving and western. Many thanks to the members that brought horses or just came to show your support!

Many thanks to all our members who brought horses or came to offer help and support. A special thanks to Charlie and Jan Cox for bringing their Gypsy wagon to have on display in the breed booth.
